Despite high gas prices, people still love driving. Typical family vacations are still piling into minivans and tour. Many of us have taken trips in the car, perhaps a national park to visit family, or a little less travel in the area.
It 'an interesting dynamic in my family - both the growth of my family and my family now. Every car they own or have listened to all, has only a steering wheel, an accelerator and a brake, but usually thereis more than one driver in the car at a time! I find that when I'm in one of the posts, I'm a control, are still driving! I check over my shoulder when changing lanes. I check to make sure the driver knows there is a change before. From time to time, and are very thin, the brake secret on the floor of the front passenger!
I find myself more often older than my kids in the back seat. And 'even more difficult to drive fromthere, but I still manage. Older I get, the more I pushed, the more I go where I'm sitting in the car. It 's funny, but most drivers do not appreciate the driver seat. Ironically, neither do I, if I'm the driver's seat. When it became more pilots in my family, I am increasingly drive from the back seat.
Coming from the back seat is an interesting picture. It represents an attempt to maintain control, if you're not able to supply direct. Firsta Senior Pastor I worked for many years as Associate Pastor. can allocate only a always be a passenger, the seats of the car.
During my last two years, after our long-term senior pastor has retired, the church has in the interim pastor and a year later, led to another interim pastor. She and a committee of church members were responsible. They were in control, instead of driving, but I discovered that she knew drivingthe church and keep it on the street. I lead more by my position in the back seat.
It has to do not particularly pleasant or easy, but I was able to keep the vehicle on the road. There were no wrecks. Here at the crossroads I share time behind the wheel with the whole body of the municipality. This is a different experience, when in fact much less frustrating. This disk image from the back seat seems a suitable one to describe, at least in part, the role and functionWomen in the Christian church through much of church history.
What was the role of women in the early church? Women have played an important role in the life of Jesus in the Gospels and the early church as described in the New Testament. There were many women in Jesus' life Some are known by name: Mary of Magdala, Mary the mother of James and John, Mary the mother of Jesus, the other Mary, accompanying women to the tomb, and MaryMartha, the sisters of Lazarus. Jesus healed a few others continued to watch over him.
Women have equal rights with men in the Gospel of the Church of the first century. There was no difference in Christ, at least theoretically, between and female, slave and free, and it is not Jewish. Men Women suffered the Jews, like men, and were dragged into jail (Acts 8:03, 9:02). Some women of high rank, "13 exerted a strong influence in contrast to Paul and Barnabas (Acts:50). Women serving in the role of the teacher. Priscilla, with her husband Aquila, taught that charismatic disciple of Apollo. (Acts 18:26). The women served as deacons (deacons in Romans 16: 1). Finally, Timothy mother Eunice and grandmother Lois were a great influence on the life of the Christian leader.
The nature of the role of women in the first century was a sense of contradiction, or at least accompanied ambivalence. E 'was equal in Christ, but women wereobviously in their behavior, clothing, etc. limited equality in marriage (1 Corinthians), she was a woman of humility and submission to the obligations to her husband. She did not speak in church, although some women had no doubt in gifts for prophecy and teaching. Their subordinate position compared with men has been justified with reference to the history of creation, when the woman was taken by man.
Women were not expected to usurp the position of lecturer as a man. Had to beknown not for their beliefs and actions to their words. As the man was seen to reflect the image of God and the Word was God's creative prerogative, women were silent. Were mainly domestic virtues. In fact, women have the power had great influence in the Church and exerted enormous, though often from the back seat.
After the time of the New Testament, we know very different role of women in what is commonly knownCulture of the Roman Empire, and in this time of barbarism that followed his case. Generally, women were subordinate roles in men. Expected to be passive, obedient and submissive. This was not uniformly true.
In 1906 an interesting discovery in the grotto of St. Paul was made in Ephesus. Archaeologists have found two photos of the sixth century on the walls of caves. One was from St. Paul and the other by a woman, Santa Tecla. The Acts of Paul and Thecla was apiece of apocryphal writings of second century. And 'apparently was widely distributed at this time.
The stories were of Paul and Thecla adventure. They met when Paul proclaimed in Iconium, "the word of God" traveled. His message was sexual abstinence until the resurrection. Thekla was a young noble virgin, Paul listening to him and his teaching was devoted.
Thekla's mother warned her boyfriend about this and he promptly madePaul was dragged before the prison director, the apostles. Somehow he won entrance to the prison Thekla and her family found her sitting at the feet of Paul. The two were brought before the governor. At the request of his mother, Paul was sentenced to flogging and banishment from the city. Thecla was condemned to be burned alive. When it was put into the fire but was unhurt.
There are other similar stories of Paul and Thecla. The historian Tertullian (160-230)complained that some Christians of Alexandria were the example of Thecla legitimize the role of women to teach and baptize in the church. Some modern scholars even contend that the Acts of Paul and Thecla a proto-feminist text. Thekla was abused by men and their world, but refused his expectations, marriage patterns match, and dress code. She boldly asserts her independence and has received support from many women.
Pictures of Paul and Thecla foundon the wall of the cave are very interesting in Ephesus. Theologian John Dominic Crossan (from his book In Search of Paul) reported that the two images are equal, which means they were of equal importance. Both raised their right hand in the gesture of teaching, which means that both were equal. The image of Paul is unchanged. Thekla, the image has been distorted. The eyes are scratched out and raised his right hand was removed. For the original creators, and TheklaPaul were similar. For those who later destroyed the photos could only be male and apostolic authority. Consequently, the female image has been blinded and silenced.
Remember the statement of Paul that in Christ in the Christian community, there is no distinction between male and female, Jew nor greek, slave nor free, e. It is not so clear, what were Paul's positions outside of this community. contemporary scholars are still wondering if Paul was'The role of leadership and authority, or the beginning of the movement to undermine Jesus clearly affirms the equality of women in its treatment of women.
We are forced to wonder and speculate what happened between the time of Jesus and the New Testament later. Obviously in the first and second centuries, was a struggle within Christianity, the role of women. The women had originally appeared in the early church leadership in meaningful places. ThisUnderstanding seems to have been later revised by the culture and meet the pressure.
The Sermon on the Mount from Matthew's Gospel contains images of salt and light. These images reflect the role of women in this culture "to be salt-seasoning land claims that the flavors of this God." Salt preserves freshness and flavor. "If you lose the taste, the taste will be like piety?" (Matthew 5: 13, translation of the message) This approach reflects the way the UnitedGod, not on positions of power, but growing where you are planted. Be faithful, while the transformation takes place by secret ballot.
We must ask ourselves how we are put under pressure to meet today's culture. As we succumb? Why we resist? A Church's role in our lives is to help to resist pressure, value cultural power, wealth, reputation and honor. We must remember the virtues of Jesus and the deep, subtle power of the mind.
Fiddler on the Roof is theStory of Tevye, a poor milkman living in Russia in the early twentieth century. It takes a lot of attention. Tevye is a man of family in a culture that focused on men. These are the women of the village, but the true flavor and life. Tevye daughters challenge him on his blind adherence to tradition and refuse to embrace new opportunities. Because he values his relationship with his daughters so high, it begins to turn into a new world -Love.
In the real world, our religious traditions teach us to not give the value of the order of oppression and injustice, wrong and unacceptable. Christianity teaches us that the way to new life, not the discovery of God in the depths of our lives, followed by the search for power, a title or prestige. This is not victory, captured or destroyed.
Jesus calls us to persevere. Our faith calls us to be salt and light of the tradition and know that sometimes the best waypass the road is to go from the back seat. The narrow gate, along a winding path, is the way of joy and hope - the way of God.
